Instead of cluttering @IC's Forthcoming Shoots 2017 here is where talk of Quake 3 Arena can happen.

To start things off, below is a match from this afternoon. The server was a rare cranked-up one where the originator of it opted for setting the defaults to the speed of the power-up called "Haste" to make the action all the more frantic. Thus, map memorization was key to remaining competitive. Being a small and tight map, I chose the Plasma Gun so I was able to really mow 'em down along the main sight lines running through the map's core.

Note that this is live multiplayer, not single player against bots. I was up against what appears to be a team, as seen by 3 of the players using the same handle format. But once I got back into my old Quake Live form, even joining this match late, I powered up near the top. And by obatining Quad Damage for about the last minute, I was able to lock in the win.

* By far most multiplayer maps are the typcial normal-speed ones, but playing a fast one is invigorating esp. since I'm getting back into things.

IF ANY OF YOU GUYS are interested in getting into Q3A, I can furnish a copy of it. It's easy to learn and uses almost any old graphics. Even a Pentium 4 can run it at high resolutions.

This one was back and forth so if it'd gone on for some more seconds, I could've been 2nd or 4th. Dunno what the two Furious guys were doing, just spectating for some reason.

Set in the Power Station. Character model is Bitterman, the unfortunate space marine hero of Quake 2 who single-handedly defeated the Strogg on their own homeworld.

This was a tough Player vs. Player match involving cunning and requiring map memorization. One of 3 matches against this player, we both began learning how the other plays and his preferred weapons. Thus the time limit yielded only a handful of frags as we staked each other out, nearly as much hide and seek as run 'n' gun. A great brushing-up experience from years of being inactive from Quake Live.

The best match yet, with all three players being equally skilled. The lead changed repeatedly throughout the game and because the map wasn't over-populated, each of us was able to learn the tactics of the others as well as formulate offenseive strategies. Traditionally this is a map I don't do well in.

A long and intense match, this was, with each of us hunting down the other and few frags in this 15 minute long round. This is Player-vs-Player action at its best and even though I got off to a slow start and closed in towards the end but failed to catch Roderic, it helped polish my deathmatch skill against live players.

And that could come in handy for Quake Champions should I invest in a powerful video card.

Going to embark on my 2nd away mission next time. In between, there's a lot of on-ship objectives to do, so already I've put in 3 hrs. of playing time in total.

Setting up a new game. Unlike all other space flight games where one controls a one-man craft or larger ship in third person perspective, Star Trek Bridge Commander has you be the captain. Orders are issued to other officers to control the ship, in this case the USS Dauntless that's like the USS Enterprise D from the 1980s TV show, to complete a series of missions during campaign mode. Having never played this type of game until now, I opted for the easiest difficulty setting.

Just a reminder that I can provide you guys with a copy of any game I post about here. Just indicate if there's one you want. A great resource for free abandoned games is MyAbandonware.com.

Cheers

Finally the 2000 (or 1100) family of nVidia video cards will soon arrive. Unfortunately, the timing couldn't be worse because bitcoin mining has driven up prices for video cards to up to 200% from last year.

GeForce GTX 2080 and GTX 2070 Ampere

@Amy - Perhaps you'd like see if you can win a big, fat, bitcoin (about $10,000) of your very own by being the first to beat this puzzle game.

About to engage a Romulan warship threatening an unarmed vessel of a Federation ally. My fourth attempt so this likely won't go well.

Last night, I returned to Star Trek Bridge Commander determined to get past the mission involving rescuing the Cardassian freighter and dealing with the Romulan warship. After becoming better acquainted with the manual attack interface, I was able to rough up the warship enough for it to finally give up and depart the area. This after the engagement lasted 10 or so minutes and had that ship repeatedly disappearing (cloaking) and reappearing. When decloaked and thus visible, targeting its specific systems through the tactical officer (the guy on the right) and manually (me), combined with getting the engineer to boost power to certain systems, is what finally did it.

Third attempt. This Ferengi smuggler is tougher to disable than the Romulan battle cruiser above. Thus, he got away again.

Typically I play James Bond 007 NIghtfire at its highest in-game resolution of 1920 x 1080 that was quite advanced for 2002 and far more realistic than the console versions including my boxed edition for the Playstation 2 Slim. However, this time for the purposes of posting here, as well as beause I'm playing at a higher difficulty, it's better to use a narrower field-of-view to keep things simpler.

This henchman is going down. Using the silencer reduces the number of his colleagues who will rush me after he's dealt with. Then I must use suction cups provided by Q to scale up 8 stories just ahead and enter the viliain's executive suite on the 30th floor to collect the Nightfire data.

Villain Drake's hired gunmen have the run of the office tower so as to stop me from escaping. Everywhere are trip wired bombs and the gunmen ambush me every step of the way. The longest and most difficult portion of the game. This mission, Tower Escape, is where Nightfire starts to show how much harder it is to play at the middle difficulty than the default Operative. I can only imagine what it'd be like playing it at the 00 level.

Sneaking through Drake's private island which contains a secret base for staging his fleet of space shuttles taking supplies and personnel to his orbitting space platform. My mission here is to disrupt all that. But first, stealth is the key to penetrating the important parts of this expansive facility. Hence, the revolver with silencer.

Being the Brosnan era, I'm about to use my personal digital assistant to open yet another sealed control room to be later used to overload and destroy a deadly rocket.

Rescuing another spy, Alura. She looks like a blonde Lara Croft and will assist me for the rest of the mission to bring down Drake and his plans to rule the world from low Earth orbit.

Spy stuff. Taking pictures of the blueprints of the villain's space platform. The last setting will be up there, but not until after a long battle with his henchmen and more sneaking around.

The villain Drake's sumptuous suite in his sea floor missile and rocket facility. Making my way through all his private military forces to slowly catch up with him. Having played this many times before, I know there's another multi-room arena of gunfire for me just beyond the far wall.

The villain's last shuttle prepares to take hot and evil babe, Kiko, to his orbiting platform. Before hitching a ride, I'll have to deal with a knot of her private ninjas at the bottom of the launch bays before I, or they, get fried when the next stuttle launches. It's another example of where the PC editoin of Nightfire differs immensely from the console versions.
